My wife and I have been blessed with nine amazing children. Our second son, Nathan, has autism and is meticulous with dates and calendars. He makes sure we know how many days until Christmas, when Summer officially begins, and even what position Mars and Venus are in the sky on any given night. An advantage of being so calendar-minded is he is an absolute champion at setting a goal and working on it every day.
About a year ago, he set a goal to do a popular ninety-day workout. He followed the program and worked out for what he thought was 90 days. We praised him for his diligence and congratulated him on his accomplishment. He went to check the final workout off the calendar, and he came back a few minutes later with a huge grin on his face. He excitedly yelled, "Dad, guess what! I didn't workout for ninety days. I worked out for ninety-eight days!" He was so proud that he did an "extra" week of working out. In that moment, I realized that he had stumbled onto something. So many times we set a concrete goal for 30-days, 60-days, or 90-days. That's neat and clean, but finite, like a box. Nathan had gone past the edges of the box. In accidentally working out an extra week, he had moved from habit to momentum and had become something new, a person who works out.
From that point on, it became the ultimate achievement in our house to do something for ninety-eight days. Suddenly, doing something for ninety-eight days meant to go beyond the limits of normal expectations. It mean to form a habit and then to keep going. Thus, the idea of 98 Days Life Coaching was born.
I have been a life coach my entire career. I didn't know that's what I was doing for most of that time, however. I didn't know there was a specific word for helping people work through problems, dilemmas, or issues and move forward in their lives. As a military spouse, I began my career moving around a lot. My first job out of college was a computer analyst for a now-extinct long distance phone company. From there, as we moved around, I worked as a programmer, analyst, software engineer, and project manager. While I loved the technical side of all of those positions, I liked working with the people more, and specifically, I liked talking to and helping out my co-workers and team members wherever I went. I found myself listening to them describe challenges they were facing in their relationships, careers, and other aspects of their lives, and I discovered that I had a talent for talking them through those challenges and helping them create solutions and make changes.
After my wife left the military, we settled down in Colorado, and about six years ago, I began teaching part-time for my alma matter. While I enjoyed teaching programming classes (and still do), my favorite course to teach was the academic success or "Intro to college" class for brand new students. In this class, I had the opportunity to teach about goals, plans, and growth mindset, and I found myself inadvertently coaching my class to believe in themselves, start on their journeys (whatever they were), and hold themselves accountable for their success. After a few quarters of teaching, my students would come up to me in the halls and excitedly update me on what they were doing. They would say things like, "I'm still making daily gratitude lists, just like you taught us," which was fantastic to hear! Pretty soon, my students started telling me that I should be a life coach.
I have had the privilege of coaching people through some pretty difficult situations over the years. I've coached teenagers on life and career goals. I've coached young adults to help them find their voice and gain confidence. I've coached doctoral candidates to overcome fear and anxiety and finish their dissertations, and I've coached both men and women to improve their relationships. Closer to home, I've coached my wife through postpartum depression, and most recently, I helped my autistic son to overcome a crippling fear of public speaking to be able to give a talk in church - he knocked it out of the park in front of about a hundred people!
Whatever you or your family member may be struggling with, or wherever you want to go with your life, I believe I can help. If you work with me, we'll partner together to get you going in the direction you want with momentum behind you!
